Jill May (she/they), LMSW, is a licensed psychotherapist practicing in New York City. She holds a Masters degree from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. With a background in trauma-informed care and crisis response, Jill focuses on working with queer and TGNC adults.

Jill’s early career work with individuals transitioning from incarceration taught her the deep impact of systemic forces like racism, classism and intergenerational transmission of trauma — as well as the healing power of community. As healing from our difficult experiences is complex, daunting and often messy, it is important to remember that support can make that process feel a little less lonely. Through her collaboration with a movement therapist and as a high school track coach, they realized the critical importance of caring for the whole self. Jill encourages building support within community and linking up to resources that would be beneficial and supportive, for example: massage, physical therapy, support groups, psychiatry, art or other creative practices.

She also has extensive experience working through the challenges of human connecting with a special focus on gender identity exploration as well. Largely utilizing a trauma-informed and relational approach, Jill adjusts her style based on the preference and needs of the client, centering humor and connection with clients. Jill strives to make therapy relevant to the particular “language” of each client through references to TV shows, music, books and video games. Each session is deeply personalized and alive to the moment because no two people need the same thing and every day is different. Jill believes that, ultimately, healing isn’t just about managing trauma; it’s about finding the strength to embrace joy in the face of that trauma.
